The Physical Sciences group of Wiley China is offering a Journal Publishing Manager position based in our Beijing or Shanghai office to lead and manage the publication of a list of premier partner journals in the subject of materials science, including InfoMat, EcoMat, SmartMat, SusMat, Carbon Energy, VIEW, etc., This professional position requires experience in the functional area; the incumbent will need to acquire knowledge and experience in the discipline, solve a range of straightforward problems using knowledge learned on the job and by applying standard procedures.

Job Scope and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and, where appropriate, lead bids for journal acquisitions in China
  • Maintain relationships with societies and editors of acquisition targets
  • Liaise with colleagues to ensure smooth transition of acquired journals into company processes
  • Improve the financial and publication performance of the journals in the list to best practice levels
  • Lead, plan and implement strategies to develop the current journals in the list to increase readership and dissemination
  • Maintain sound relationships with other staff and customers
  • Liaise closely with the Editors of journals in the list, and assist in developing these journals to their full potential
  • Ensure that the journals are published on time and within budget and to the reasonable expectations of associated societies and Editors in accordance with agreed business practices and plans
  • Ensure that the Editors are kept fully appraised of all activities in relation to the journals
  • Liaise closely with colleagues responsible for marketing the journals and generating advertising and special sales revenue and ensure that clients are kept fully informed.
  • Liaise closely with the Editorial Offices and Content Management regarding any issues arising during the publication of journals in the list
  • Liaise with staff globally to share and maintain relevant knowledge about the subject areas related to journals in the list

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master degree or above in Materials Science is desired. The candidate must be computer literate and proficient with standard computer applications such as word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel), presentations (Powerpoint), and email (Outlook), as well as internet search/research tools
  • Publishing experience and a track record of journal and society management
  • Demonstrated effective organization skills are essential, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and tight deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong relationship management skills are essential, including the ability to relate successfully to people at all levels of business both externally and internally and to form and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with those people
  • Professional, mature and decisive in approach
  • Demonstrated professional communication skills in English and Mandarin language (written, verbal, and listening) and presentation skills
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally

The Physical Sciences group of Wiley China is offering a Journal Publishing Assistant role to assist the Physical Sciences team to publish Wiley journals in line with associated client & Wiley expectations and provide administration support to Physical Sciences.

Job Scope and Responsibilities:

Business Management and Development

  • Prepare publisher reports for a defined list of journals and chase overdue reports from other departments
  • Assist Journal Publishing Managers (JPMs) to implement new business into Wiley workflows
  • Assist JPMs to prepare journal strategic plans, by compiling data, undertaking web research
  • Assist the Editorial team in evaluating new business opportunities by undertaking bibliometric analyses, web-based research and obtaining reader reports
  • Working with JPMs, prepare accurate first drafts of contracts and publishing proposals

Administrative Duties and Others

  • Maintain internal performance measures and performance reports as required
  • Schedule, compile agendas and take minutes for internal team meetings and Board Meetings
  • Assist with the implementation of projects and new procedures affecting the Editorial teams, collating information for global projects as required
  • Consistently update and ensure effective maintenance of all information in our central database systems whilst ensuring that Wiley’s status as a publisher of choice is maintained
  • Prepare documents for journal editorial board meetings as required
  • Assist with catering for client meetings as required
  • Contribute to team meetings and as departmental representative to internal committees as required
  • Provide administrative support to the Director and Editorial Manager as required
  • Proactively seek inclusion of Wiley journals into abstracting and indexing services
  • Handle routine society and journal correspondence on behalf of JPMs
  • In the absence of a JPM, handle day-to-day journal business where appropriate (payments, meeting arrangements, filing etc.) by liaising with the Editorial Manager and other colleagues as required
  • Represent Wiley at conferences locally, interstate and, occasionally, within the Asia-Pacific as required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The JPA got at least undergraduate degree, and must be computer literate and proficient with word processing (MS Word) and spreadsheet (MS Excel) and MS PowerPoint computer applications, as well as internet use for searching and research and email
  • Previous experience in a publishing or administrative position is preferred but not necessary.
  • Aptitude for learning in-house company systems, and understanding of office procedures
  • An analytical approach in looking for ways to improve processes
  • Excellent attention to detail and desire to work within and support a busy team
  • A professional, mature and decisive approach
  • Demonstrated effective organization skills and time management skills are essential including the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously
  • The ability to work under pressure with a strong customer support focus, and work both individually and as part of a team
  • Strong relationship management skills are essential including the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels of business both externally and internally and to form and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with those people
  • Fluent in both English and Chinese language is necessary
