Materials for ‘Epidermal’ Virtual- and Augmented-Reality Technologies

Advanced, immersive systems for virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) promise to transform the way that we interact with computer-generated environments and, by extension, with one another.  Although audio-visual aspects of VR/AR hardware are increasingly well developed, a frontier, underexplored opportunity for materials science and engineering is in the development of interfaces that add spatio-temporally controlled physical sensations to the VR/AR experience, with the skin as the input interface.  This talk introduces a collection of foundational ideas in materials science and electrical engineering that enable a unique, new class of technology for this purpose – thin, soft, lightweight sheets that embed wirelessly controlled arrays of millimeter-scale mechanical actuators, capable of gently laminating onto the skin at nearly any region of the body.  These systems qualitatively expand the VR/AR interface through complex patterns of physical sensory inputs, time-coordinated with visual and auditory cues.

Harvesting Water Energy by Triboelectric Nanogenerators: From Rain Droplets to Ocean Waves

Water covers more than 70% of Earth’s surface, but harvesting water-related energy in our living environment has a rather low efficiency. The traditional electromagnetic generator (EMG) is most effective for high-speed flowing water, and it is not effective for harvesting low-frequency, random direction and variable amplitude water wave energy. The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) invented by our group is unique for harvesting such low-quality water energy. TENGs apply Maxwell’s displacement current in energy and sensors. TENGs have three major application fields: micro/nano-power sources, self-powered sensors and blue energy. In this presentation, we will present the applications of TENGs for harvesting water-related energy, from tiny rain droplets to ocean waves. We will cover not only the fundamental science of TENGs, but will also focus on technology innovations and prospective applications.
